Book Review - Favorite Sons

About the Book

Award Winning journalist and true crime writer Robin Yocum knows about mysteries. He spent eleven years following every detail of reported investigations, interviewing countless sources and cross-referencing data in order to uncover the truth, and revealing the often elusive culprits behind local crimes. He knows that sometimes the obvious criminal is not the real criminal, that the most important clues are always right where you forgot to look, and that some people have so much to lose that they will do absolutely anything to cover their tracks.

In Favorite Sons, Yocum puts his knowledge of the way criminals think, the stories crime scenes tell, and the way peoples lives get caught in the balance to practice. The result is a skillfully crafted, emotionally harnessing, and authoritatively captivating thriller that blurs the lines between heroes and villains, and leaves the police, the protagonists, and even the readers conflicted over who they should be rooting for.

The book revolves around Hutch Van Buren, who was a carefree fifteen-year-old boy searching for arrowheads in a small industrial town in Ohio with his three closest friends when an altercation between his comrades and Petey Sanchez, a troubled seventeen-year-old, leads to Petey’s accidental death. Together, Hutch and his friends become ensnared in a web of secrets. One-Eyed Jack, a local ne’er do-well and child molester, goes to prison for the crime while the boys keep their pact of silence, each shouldering the burden of truth in his own way.

Thirty-three years later, Van Buren is the prosecuting attorney in Summit County, Ohio, and a candidate for state attorney general when he learns that he and his boyhood friends weren’t the only ones keeping a secret about Petey’s death. One-Eyed Jack has been released from prison and, facing new charges as a sex offender, attempts to blackmail Van Buren in exchange for his continued silence.

Van Buren must decide between his political career and the duty of the office he has sworn to uphold. With the clock ticking, Van Buren has a week to seek out his boyhood friends and search his soul while he sorts out three decades of deceit he helped create.

Favorite Sons is a riveting novel in which friendships are pitted against truth with dead-on dialog and unforgettable characters. Yocum’s debut fiction novel is a fresh, fast-paced story that explores a sharply etched world of intrigue, friendship, politics, and, ultimately, the weight of truth.

My Take on the Book
This book takes you on a whirwind, complex journey strewn with deep relationship issues, greed, corruption and much more. As a reader you are drawn into the story and transfixed by the characters. A thrilling book that will keep your attention from the first to last page!

This book made me think about decisions that I had made.
The story drew me in and I was amazed at the how thorough the book was. The author has developed an amazing story that cannot be rivaled in most stories! As a person who spent much time in Ohio, I was intrigued at the setting that the author provides the reader. I have both visited and spent time in the area that the author writes about and the way that the author portrays the people and the areas is dead on. I was amazed at how accurate and detailed the author was, he nails it completely!

Overall though this book is a murder mystery and as a reader you are drawn in and you are kept on pins and needles until the very end!

I love mysteries and this book does not does not disappoint!
