DVD Review - Power Rangers Samurai: Monster Bash Halloween Special

About the DVD
Join the Power Rangers for a Halloween party so awesome that their enemies are dying to get on the ghostly guest list in the new Lionsgate Home Entertainment release of Power Rangers Monster Bash. Featuring three Halloween themed episodes from the beloved Power Rangers Samurai series, Power Rangers Monster Bash Halloween special will be available on DVD and Digital Download September 11, 2012. The Power Rangers Monster Bash Halloween special DVD will be available in collectible O-card packaging for the suggested retail price of $14.98.

My Take on the DVD
If you love the Power Rangers, and you love the creatures that they battle, this is the DVD for you. With two episodes that are just filled with action and battles between the Power Rangers and some downright eerie villains, this is a DVD that any fan of the show would simply love. These episodes were two that I had not seen in the past so I enjoyed watching them and they truly were jam-packed with battles and creatures for the Power Rangers to defeat. The episodes were fun and engaging, and even my oldest who really did not watch any of these episodes enjoyed watching and the overall plot.

About the Movie
What better way to get in the Halloween sprit than by celebrating with a monster party? Lionsgate Home Entertainment makes Mad Monster Party available for the first time in High Definition with the release of the Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray + DVD) as well as HD Digital Download and On Demand arriving just in time for the spookiest holiday of the year.. From the team who created the stop-motion and animated holiday classics “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” and “Frosty the Snowman,” Mad Monster Party stars the voice talents of Boris Karloff (Frankenstein) and Phyllis Diller (Eight on the Lam). The Blu-ray Combo Pack bonus materials include a “making of” featurette, plus two featurettes that look at the animation and the music of the film, as well as two bonus sing-along tracks. The Mad Monster Party Blu-ray Combo Pack arrives on September 4th for the suggested retail price of $14.99.

My Take on the Movie

I have been a fan of some of the older cartoons that were made with stop motion photography and around the holidays my whole family usually sits around watching Frosty or Rudolph. I was amazed to find that I had never seen this in the past so I was delighted to have an opportunity to see it before it is released and share it with my family.

The show itself was fun and I was amazed at the number of big name actors of the day that they got to be voice actors for this. The animation was a bit choppy at times, but many of the cartoons that were made in this way were. I loved the storyline and so did the kids. I can now say that for our family at least this will be a new Halloween favorite (and maybe even at other times of the year too)!

Book Review - Bob-Along: Colors: Bath Books that Float

About the Book
Toddlers will love sharing their bath with cheerful Bob-Alongs animal friends. This floating vinyl bath book is filled with pictures of water-loving animals--and when put in Baby's bath, the duck on the front cover floats in an upright position. It's weighted at the bottom so that it floats standing up. Pictures on inside pages help toddlers learn distinguish colors as they splash in the tub with pictures of ducks, fish, frogs, a paddling puppy, and a dragonfly.

My Take on the Book
This was a great bath time book for any toddler. The duck does what it says and will float upright which will make a toddler or young baby laugh, and you can engage your child in reading during all of this fun. The mixtures of colors and animals allow a parent to start their child distinguishing between different things while having fun, which at that age is definitely important. This is a great book for a parent with a young child or a parent to be!

Book Review - Miss Fox's Class Shapes Up

About the Book
Miss Fox's class is back, and this time the students are lethargic and cranky until they learn to eat better, exercise, and get more sleep. "This class is going to get fit!" Miss Fox says. "So we can be ready for Field Day?" asks Frog. "Not just for Field Day," says Miss Fox. "For every day!"

My Take on the Book
Lately our news has been bombarded by reports of children and obesity. In this story by Eileen Spinelli, she takes the topic to Miss Fox's classroom. Miss Fox is aware that her students are lethargic, out of shape, hungry, cranky, etc. She decided to discuss these issues with them and to problem solve so they can become healthier and happier children.

Once again Miss Fox helps the children to find the solutions and they are very creative. You will see them grow in their new knowledge, become stronger, happier, and healthier. I feel this story could be a wonderful way to introduce the discussions of eating healthy, exercising, turning off the computer , TV and video games. Hopefully you and your children will establish positive ways that everyone can participate in becoming healthier.

Book Review - Miss Fox's Class Goes Green

About the Book
When Miss Fox shows up at school riding her bicycle, Mouse asks, "Do you have a flat tire?" "No," Miss Fox tells her students. "I am going green!"

Soon everyone in the class is working to keep the earth healthy. Mouse takes shorter showers (and does her singing after!); Bunny brings a cloth bag to the supermarket; and Possum turns the lights off when he goes out.

And Miss Fox's simple act has ripples even beyond her own students... the principal starts riding his bike, too, and soon the whole school is going green! As in Peace Week in Miss Fox's Class, Eileen Spinelli and Anne Kennedy have combined their talents to make a serious subject both funny and inspiring.

My Take on the Book
Eileen Spinelli has written anaother meaningful story to share and inspire adults and children. We all know the importance of "going green" : to recycle, reuse, conserve, etc. In this story , Miss Fox inspires and problem solves with her students . She helps them brainstorm ways in which they can help planet Earth and the community they live in. I love the humor in this story. For example Frog says: "I can use less water . . .I can stop taking showers." And Squirrel says: "I know how to save paper. No more homework." The students find many ways to make a difference and you can see how proud they are of their efforts to "go green". I feel this is another exceptional story teachers and parents could add to their personal libraries and read to their young children.

Book Review - Today on Election Day

About the Book
The school gym is a polling place, and Bailey, Ren, David, Meg, Aiden, and Isabella know all about Election Day and voting! Bailey helped her Aunt Julia run for a seat on the city council. Aiden goes with his grandpa to vote. David's brother Jake will be voting for the first time. Meg talks about how years ago, some citizens were not permitted to vote. A perfect picture book for future voters of America, Today on Election Day will simultaneously entertain and educate.

My Take on the Book
This book has arrived just in time for the 2012 elections in November. How fortunate for teachers and parents to share the story with their young people in their lives. The story relates the history of voting and the struggles of women and minorities. It describes the process and how important it is to take your responsibility to vote seriously. I feel this book is an important piece to the education of our young future voters. Share it with them today before our voting takes place in November. Remember your vote will help make history in our democratic country.

Book Review - Miss Fox's Class Gets it Wrong

About the Book
When Miss Fox's class sees Officer Blue Fox leading Miss Fox into the police station, they think their beloved teacher has been arrested! When Miss Fox's mysterious behavior leads them to believe she's preparing to run away from the law, her students confront her. But she wasn't planning to run away. She and Officer Blue Fox are preparing to get married and go on their honeymoon! Boy, oh boy, did Miss Fox's class get it wrong.

My Take on the Book
This is not a story just for children. How often have you allowed your imagination to lead you to gossip or to tell rumors about someone? This story pinpoints that dilemma with the children in Miss Fox's classroom. I feel this is a good story for a family to share about spreading gossip and rumors. It shows how lies can hurt an innocent person. Yes, a heavy subject but one that we need to approach with our children and ourselves. Eileen Spinelli writes with sensitivity and knowledge on the issue.

Book Review - Vampire School: Teacher Screecher (Book 4)

About the Book
When their teacher is out sick, Lee Price and his best friends are subjected to the world's meanest, most math-obsessed substitute teacher--and she's an actual monster, to boot! But something's fishy about Miss Fit. Will the kids find out before they go cross-eyed from too much math?

My Take on the Book
This book makes fun at math a bit, and we know that many kids' eyes will definitely go cross-eyed from math at times, at least from their perspective. This book is so light and fun, and my daughter just plows through them. I have to say that this was definitely one of the first book series that she has asked for more. At this time, this is the final book in the series, so we will have to wait for more, but when there is, I know that we will be in line for book 5!

Book Review - Vampire School: Ghoul Trip (Book 2)

About the Book
St. Orlok's Elementary is no ordinary school...it's a school for young vampires! Vampires like Lee Price.

Lee and his best friends Billy and Bella head off on a class trip to the County Fair. But when they arrive, there are some very strange characters hanging around. Could they have anything to do with all the robberies around town? The vampire friends decide that it's up to them to get to the bottom of the mystery!

My Take on the Book
This was a great second book in the series! You get the same great characters in the same quirky school on a whole new adventure. In this book though you get some new characters to add color to the plot which was simply great! I love this series and so does my daughter. We have been reading the first and second book together and it goes by so quickly! I highly recommend this to all parents who have kids that love monsters, they will simply love this!

Book Review - Vampire School: Casketball Capers (Book 1)

About the Book
St. Orlok's Elementary is no ordinary school...it's a school for young vampires! Vampires like Lee Price.

Lee and his best friends Billy and Bella are on the St. Orlok's casketball team. They're all getting ready for the big game against the Chaney Street Werewolves. But when the other team arrives, it seems that some of them aren't planning on playing fair. Lee needs a plan--fast! Will he manage to foil the cheats before the final whistle?

My Take on the Book
I had never read any of this series until recently and I can't believe what my family and I were missing. This book and the series was made for the younger reader, which is perfect for where my eldest is at. She also loves monsters and is in elementary school, so what could be better. She was able to get through this book without any trouble and she just loved it and wanted to jump into the next book right away. This is a great series to read with your child or to let them get into as they will simply love it!

Book Review - Vampire School: Stage Fright (Book 3)

About the Book
Disaster strikes when the lead in the school play, Snow Fright and the Seven Dwarfs, loses her voice on the morning of the play. But Lee, Bella, and Billy concoct a plan to save the day . . . and encounter Miss Gargoyle's mystery guest!

My Take on the Book
This was a great continuation of the Vampire School Series. the book is easy to read for young readers, but even more so, the plot and characters are so much fun! This book in general was fun as it brought me back to my times in high school musicals and plays and some of the strange happenings that occur. Now of course this was definitely more over the top than I ever experienced, but it was definitely still memorable and fun and with the main characters being monsters, any child will enjoy it!

Book Review - The Boxcar Children Books 1-4

About the Book Set
The paperback editions of The Boxcar Children Mysteries: #1, The Boxcar Children; #2, Surprise Island; #3, The Yellow House Mystery; and #4, Mystery Ranch are offered together in a cardboard case.

My Take on the Set
This was an amazing set and for the price, you get so much. I have been a fan of the boxcar children since I was a child and read many of the books themselves. I was amazed to find that there were so many more books that I initially remembered. I now, am encouraging my own children to read these books and they are enjoying them as I once did (and still do). We have already gotten through the first two books in the series and now I am turning it over to my eldest to start reading the next so we will see how she does! This is a great series for the whole family or for just one person. There is action, friendship and so much more! If you have never gotten into this series, you definitely should!

Book Review - Miss Fox's Class Earns a Field Trip

About the Book
Miss Fox's class is back! Now the students want to go to Roller Coaster Planet -- and they are determined to earn the money for their trip. But each fund-raising attempt ends in disaster involving Percy P. Possum, the school's visiting author. As the class pays to repair the various mishaps they cause, soon their earnings are going down, not up! How will they ever get to Roller Coaster Planet?

Young readers will enjoy Eileen Spinelli's appealing animals and Anne Kennedy's hilarious paintings -- and learn a little math into the bargain! Eileen and Anne also teamed up to produce Peace Week in Miss Fox's Class and Miss Fox's Class Goes Green.

My Take on the Book
Miss Fox's class is once again involved in problem solving. This time earning money to visit an amusement park. Although they have good intentions, they run into problems.

This is a good story to show children that no matter what difficulties they encounter they need to persevere. Mr.Possum was the brunt of so many calamities and finally said it this way to the children as they tried to remedy all the problems along the way: YOU NEVER GAVE UP. So many times our children want to have " quick fixes" and that is not the answer. This story shows how the children's responsibility for their actions wins them their trip.

Book Review - Callie Cat, Ice Skater

About the Book
Day and night, Callie Cat ice skates on the pond in her backyard. She loves to ice skate, loves it more than chocolate cake, more than going to the mall—more than her friends can understand. That is, until the Honeybrook Ice Rink announces a contest, and everyone thinks it could be Callie’s big chance! Now Callie practices day and night. She wants to win the big prize…doesn’t she?

Sometimes doing something you love is its own reward, as Eileen Spinelli’s unusual story demonstrates. Anne Kennedy’s exuberant art shows a unique heroine in motion.

My Take on the Book
In our world of competitive skating, gymnastics, baseball, football, track, swimming, etc. here is a story this is well worth its gold in reading. Yes, there are children who want to be the winners and are so competitive that even their parents are part of their push to win.

This story is such a breath of fresh air within all that competitiveness . It speaks of total joy of a little cat who loves to skate. She is encouraged to compete but when she does not win she is not upset. She is just happy to return to her pond and skate with her love for her skating. To me this is a lesson for all those competitive people out there. Don't forget the JOY.

JOE Renegades is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat

My Take on the Blu-ray
I started watching G.I. Joe back in the 1980's and at that time I was hooked on the series, toys, etc. This new series was one that I had not seen in the past, but the makers of this series have stayed true to the ideal that G.I. Joe stood for back in the 1980's and made it even more fun with better graphics and a strong story line. The quality of this was amazing and on blu-ray the color and sound just explode from the screen. I loved the bonus features as well, as I always enjoy seeing how things are made and especially as a fan of cartooning, I find it very interesting to see how these artists come up with their masterpieces. All-in-all this was a great series, and whether you have been a fan for a long time or you just started watching, you will love this series and this blu-ray!

My Take on the Product
This
set was so much fun. My kids and I love playing angry birds on my wife and my phones and now we can build and tear down our own angry bird sets. I found that my girls loved this and wanted to use this over and over again. We actually had to set up a play schedule to let them take turns shooting the bird, as they both always wanted to do it. The set was easy enough to build and put back together after it was destroyed. This will lead to a ton of fun and with the multiple sets you will have a lot of fun working on them all!

Book Review - Tim Tebow: A Promise Kept

About the Book
Young sports fans who read football star Tim Tebow's story will be inspired by the challenges he has overcome on his path to athletic success. Author Mike Klis, sports columnist for the Denver Post, focuses on a pivotal challenge that confronted Tim Tebow in 2008. As Florida Gators quarterback, he galvanized his teammates and Gator fans everywhere with a rousing speech after the team's disappointing loss to Ole Miss.
"I just want to say one thing. To the fans and everybody in Gator Nation, I'm sorry. . . . But I promise you one thing . . . . You will never see any player in the entire country play as hard as I will play for the rest of the season."

It was a promise Tim Tebow kept, as he went on to lead the Gators to ten successive victories. In language that will appeal especially to young readers, Klis tells Tebow's life story to date, from early school days, as young Tim overcomes his dyslexia . . . his high school football experiences . . . his college glory days with the Florida Gators . . . the Denver Broncos making Tebow their the first round draft choice . . . and in 2012, his dramatic move to the New York Jets! Here's an exciting page-turner for young readers and an inspiring story for sports fans of all ages.

My Take on the Book
This was a quick and easy read that, though unauthorized, was an interesting take on a rising football star. The book gives you some deep insight into Tim Tebow and the motivation behind what he does and who let spirituality guide him on his journey through life. I truly enjoyed the read and found out so much more about Tebow than I had in the past. From reading this book you can see that he is much more than just a football player and it makes me respect him even more. The book was inspirational and any young child would learn much from understanding and following Tebow's examples.

Book Review - Heart on Fire

About the Book
On November 5, 1872, Susan B. Anthony made history--and broke the law--when she voted in the US presidential election, a privilege that had been reserved for men. She was arrested, tried, and found guilty: "The greatest outrage History ever witnessed," she wrote in her journal. It wasn't until 1920 that women were granted the right to vote, but the civil rights victory would not have been possible without Susan B. Anthony's leadership and passion to stand up for what was right.

My Take on the Book
Do the young women , girls, in your life know the journey women have made over the last 100+ years which have brought them the right to vote, attend college, become doctors, etc? I think this is a book that every parent or grandparent who has a young girl in their lives needs to share with them.

Susan B. Anthony is one of those women who risked everything on November 5, 1872 when she cast her ballot for president of the United States. She broke the law and was tried and convicted. Every woman should appreciate her courage and perseverance , as well as the other women involved, who did not give up until the 19th Amendment became law and women had the right to vote on August 18, 1920.

This story shows the struggle these women had and it should help us appreciate the privilege we have to vote.

Book Review - Together at Christmas

About the Book
It's Christmas Eve, and a family of ten mice shivers in the snow. One by one, each mouse finds a place to stay warm, only to discover that they'd rather huddle together on this holiday night. With gently rhyming text and charming illustrations, this picture book is a wonderful read-aloud at Christmas time.

My Take on the Book
This is a sweet story written in rhyme with beautiful illustrations. I t is a story of 10 mice who need to find shelter on Christmas night. They find their shelter in so many ways separately but eventually come back together in a place where they can once again celebrate their love and friendship for each other.

Book Review - Sarah Gives Thanks: How Thanksgiving Became a National Holiday

About the Book
During the nineteenth century, Sarah Josepha Hale dedicated her life to making Thanksgiving a national holiday, all while raising a family and becoming a groundbreaking writer and women's magazine editor. Sarah Hale's inspiring story, accompanied by luscious watercolor illustrations, tells the tale of one woman who wouldn't take no for an answer.

My Take on the Book
Do you ever wonder how our national holiday called THANKSGIVING began? Well this true story describes the history of the holiday and the woman who endlessly fought for it to become the celebrated day it is today.

Sarah Josepha Hall was widowed young with five children and had to find a way to support them. She turned to writing and became a well known writer and editor. It took Sarah 36 years until she found a president, Abraham Lincoln, who issued the proclamation declaring a national day of thanksgiving.

Sarah was also instrumental in supporting and furthering the education of women in the 1800's. What courage and strength for a women to do that so long ago.

I feel our young women today need to learn about these brave women who were instrumental not only in focusing on the rights of women, but in the institutions of education, family, and tradition.

Book Review - Peace Week in Miss Fox's Class

About the Book
Miss Fox is tired of hearing her young students quarrel. So she announces Peace Week—no more squabbling for one whole week! The children chime in with their own rules: no fighting, don't say mean things, and help others. Throughout the week each of the little animals gets a chance to practice this new behavior. When Polecat teases Bunny for wearing a bright yellow sweater, instead of poking fun back at Polecat, Bunny admires his sweater. Soon, to their surprise, the animals are finding that it's easy to help others, take turns, and say nice things, even when someone is grumpy to them. Wouldn't it be nice, Squirrel says, if every week could be Peace Week?

My Take on the Book
Miss Fox's students have many of the same issues with arguing and disagreements that normal people have with family and friends . There are always interactions that produce disagreements . The difference between Miss Fox's class and others is her clever idea of being peaceable with others for a week. She challenged her students to find ways to get along with others. Her efforts brought positive results and it became a weekly tradition.

What a great book to use in a classroom or family situations where there are disagreements.. It is definitely a springboard for discussion for problem solving through difficult, often emotional situations. It may not solve the problems, but I feel it could definitely open up communication.

My Take on the Product
I was lucky enough to get a chance to try the new kidfresh meals that you can find at Kroger. I was very impressed with the number of different varieties that are made with kids in mind. We tried the above items and I have to say that my kids simply loved them all. The portion sizes were just right indicates stated how much they enjoyed the taste. There are still some other varieties that have not tried yet, but I know that we will be back and we will try the others then. As a parent, I was impressed with the overall nutritional value that is offered in these meals. Too often quick meals like these are not as healthy, but in looking over the box it seems that it does hold nutritional value. For me, the proof is in the results, and that is my kid's comments. For this product, my kids gave it two thumbs up which is a high praise in their books.
